Suspect Dies from Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound After Shooting Female

Bakersfield, Kern County, CA: A suspect fatally shot himself after shooting a woman and fleeing from police trying to negotiate a safe surrender of the suspect Friday night in Bakersfield.

Bakersfield Police Department officers responded to the 3100 block of Audubon Drive for a report of gunshots around 11:30 p.m., Feb. 17, 2023, according to Bakersfield Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult female victim suffering from a minor gunshot wound to her hand. The victim said she had been shot by an adult male at a residence in the 2500 block of Elm Street, reported Bakersfield PD in a news release.

“The victim was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive,”stated Bakersfield PD.

Officers responded to the residence of the shooting on Elm Street and attempted to negotiate a safe surrender of the suspect when officers determined the suspect had already fled from the residence while still in possession of the handgun, according to BPD.

“As the suspect fled through neighboring yards, officers reported hearing an additional gunshot. The suspect was located in a yard in the 2600 block of Elm Street, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and was pronounced deceased at the scene,”said BPD.

BPD reported no officers fired their weapons during this incident.

The identity of the deceased will be released by the Kern County Coroner at a later time.
