Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded to a reported structure fire in the 600 block of North Kingsley Drive shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Arriving firefighters found smoke billowing from a three-story apartment building. The LAFD reported that several vehicles were on fire in the building’s ground-floor parking lot.

A 29-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy were trapped behind a metal gate where the fire was located. Crews cut a hole in the gate so the woman and child could crawl through to safety.

LAFD paramedics at the scene evaluated the two patients and transported them to a local hospital. Their conditions were unknown.

According to the LAFD, both residential upper floors of the building were evacuated due to heavy smoke from the parking level.

Approximately 50 firefighters extinguished the flames in 39 minutes, reported the LAFD. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A Tesla Model S Plaid was believed to have caught fire in the carport; however, authorities have not confirmed that information.
