Vehicle Strikes Multiple LASD Recruits on Morning Run in Whittier

Whittier, Los Angeles County, CA: A vehicle struck a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department recruit class during their run on the 10600 block of Mills Avenue in Whittier around 6:26 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16. Multiple recruits were injured and all victims were transported to local hospitals, according to LASD.

According to authorities at a press conference on Wednesday, 22 of the approximate 75 recruits running in formation were injured along with the driver of the vehicle.

Fire Captain Sheila Kelliher, PIO with the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported there were five immediate critical patients, four moderate, and 14 with minor injuries. Those numbers may change when the patients are possibly recategorized at the hospital, Kelliher stated at the press conference.

The most critically injured were transported to trauma centers. Firefighters heard the crash due to the fire station’s close proximity to the collision and immediately responded to the scene.

The driver was detained and DUI is being investigated as a possible cause of the collision. Speed will also be a factor that will be examined in the investigation.

The roadway is expected to be closed for several hours as the California Highway Patrol investigates the scene of the incident.

No further details were available due to the ongoing investigation.
