Wrong Way Driver Killed in 60 Freeway Crash

Ontario, San Bernardino County, CA: A driver traveling the wrong way on the 60 Freeway early Tuesday morning was killed in a collision with another vehicle.

California Highway Patrol Rancho Cucamonga Station officers responded to a wrong way traffic collision westbound on the 60 Freeway at the Grove Avenue exit in the city of Ontario just after midnight, Feb. 21.

Once firefighters and officers arrived on scene, they located two vehicles with one person still inside a vehicle, not breathing.

The driver of the vehicle traveling the wrong way was pronounced deceased at the scene by firefighters.

A truck driver who witnessed the crash and almost hit the wrong way driver and declined to speak on camera, said he saw the vehicle come up the wrong way from Grove Avenue exit going eastbound on the westbound exit from Grove, entering the 60 Freeway the wrong way.

When the wrong way driver attempted to turn around on the westbound 60, that is when the wrong way driver was T-boned by another vehicle on the freeway, according to the witness.

CHP had all traffic diverted off at Grove Avenue from the westbound 60 Freeway.

A SigAlert was issued for an unknown amount of time for all westbound 60 Freeway lanes at Grove Avenue.

The name of the deceased 78-year-old male driver from San Bernardino is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, according to the CHP news release of the traffic collision.

The 56-year-old female driver from Chino who struck the wrong way vehicle sustained minor injuries, according to the release.

CHP Rancho Cucamonga office is handling the investigation.
