The incident unfolded when officers responded to a call for service at a local motel in the city of El Monte.

The call was regarding a possible stabbing victim at the location. When officers arrived on the scene, they confronted the suspect and an officer-involved shooting occurred, said Captain Andrew Meyer of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at a press conference Tuesday night.

The suspect fled the hotel room into the parking lot and a second officer-involved shooting occurred. Two officers from El monte PD and the suspect were struck by gunfire, said Meyer.

The El Monte officers were transported to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center where they later succumbed to their wounds, and the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.

One of the officers was a veteran officer with at least 22 years on the job, the other officer was less than a year. Both officers had ties to the community.

“These two heroes paid the ultimate sacrifice, today they were murdered by a coward,” El Monte interim police chief said at the press conference.

Key News Network video from the location shows two people taken into custody. The involvement of the two in custody was not immediately known.

The officers and suspect were not identified at this time. The investigation is preliminary at this point and the incident remains under investigation.
