4 Critically Injured in Fiery Semi Rollover Crash on 5 Freeway

Santa Fe Springs, Los Angeles County, CA: A violent, fiery semi rollover crash late Thursday night caused the truck to fall about 10 feet into a trench and catch fire, ejecting at least two victims and injuring two others from a separate vehicle.

California Highway Patrol Santa Fe Springs officers received multiple of 911 calls for a violent collision on the southbound 5 Freeway at Carmenita Road in Santa Fe Springs shortly after 11:15 p.m. Thursday, Apr. 27.

Arriving officers located at least two vehicles involved – a jeep and a tractor-trailer. The semi was fully engulfed in flames and had fallen into a cement trench.

Firefighters from the Santa Fe Springs Fire Department along with the Los Angeles County Fire Department worked to extinguish the blaze.

At least one female was also inside the trench, reported to be ejected from the semi. Firefighters utilized ladders and a pulley system to rescue the female from the trench. At least one other male was located on the right hand shoulder of the freeway.

Two female occupants in the Jeep were able to exit the vehicle and assessed by paramedics.

All vehicles involved had left the roadway and crashed into the right hand shoulder embankment. All four victims were transported to area trauma centers.

CHP Santa Fe Springs is continuing to investigate what led to the crash.
