The California Highway Patrol, Lancaster Sheriff’s deputies, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a traffic collision that occurred around 6 p.m. Monday in the intersection of Challenger Way and Avenue E in an unincorporated area of the city of Lancaster.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a collision involving a semi truck and a sedan at the location. Preliminary information indicates that a male driver of the sedan was initially listed in critical condition and at least two children inside the vehicle were airlifted to Los Angeles Children’s Hospital.

A firefighter was observed administering CPR on a male adult for several minutes as he was loaded into an ambulance and transported to Antelope Valley Hospital. The CHP told Key News Network that the man was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Further investigation into the crash, according to the CHP, suggests that the semi driver, identified by CHP as Troy Alan Turya, 53, a resident of Kingsburg, California, was driving eastbound on Avenue E, approaching the intersection with Challenger Way. The driver of a Kia sedan, identified only as a 63-year-old man from Rosamond, California, had been involved in a previous traffic collision causing his Kia to become disabled within the intersection. The driver had exited his vehicle after the initial crash and for reasons still unknown under investigation, the semi crashed into both the Kia and driver.

The CHP reported that the semi driver was uninjured in the crash and the children, both female, sustained minor injuries.
