The collision occurred around 7:25 p.m. at the intersection with Avocet Drive, near a shopping center that includes Walmart and Trader Joe’s, according to Ventura police.

Authorities reported that the man, believed to be homeless, was pushing a cart with his belongings through the crosswalk when it overturned, scattering items onto the road. As he attempted to retrieve the items, a southbound vehicle in the left lane, which had a green light, struck him and his dog.

The driver remained at the scene and showed no signs of impairment, police said.

Following the crash, southbound Victoria Avenue was closed at Ralston Street, while the northbound lanes were briefly shut down before reopening.

The victim’s identity has not been released, and the investigation is ongoing.
