The California Highway Patrol was alerted to a stolen police unit from the Alhambra Police Department, which was actively pursuing the vehicle, a Dodge Durango. The pursuit began west on Interstate 10 at the 710 Freeway. East Los Angeles CHP was notified as the suspect took the 101 Freeway into the Hollywood area.

The suspect later drove to the 4900 block of Marathon Street and exited the vehicle, fleeing on foot. Officers were quick to establish a perimeter to contain the suspect. After briefly evading capture, the suspect re-emerged from hiding and again ran from officers.

An Alhambra Police Department K-9 unit was deployed, and officers, along with the K-9, successfully apprehended the suspect near Fire Station 52 at the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Oxford Street. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics transported the male to an area hospital for injuries he sustained while being tackled. According to the K-9 officer on the scene, it remains unclear whether the suspect stole the police unit during a traffic stop in which he was involved or if he was simply a passerby who jumped into the car. How he gained access to the vehicle is not known.
