Man Fatally Shot in Apparent Road Rage Incident

Vermont Square, Los Angeles, CA: A man was shot and succumbed to his wounds in an apparent road rage shooting that ended in a crash at the intersection of Figueroa Street and Vernon Avenue in the Vermont Square neighborhood of Los Angeles Thursday night.

Los Angeles Police Department was notified at 8:03 a.m. on Friday, Mar. 18, that the victim had died, according to Officer Cruz.

The call, which initially was reported as a car crash, was upgraded to a car crash with a victim of a shooting at approximately 10:53 p.m. Mar. 17, 2022.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived at the location and were able to transport the male driver suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to a local hospital. According to LAPD, the victim was transported in critical condition.

The passenger airbag was deployed, but there is no information on the whereabouts or condition of a possible passenger at this time.

LAPD Newtown Division officers responded to the location and established a crime scene. Per witnesses at scene, the incident started as a road rage incident on Vernon Avenue over the 110 Freeway. An unknown suspect shot at the victim’s vehicle, at which point they fled toward Figueroa Street where they collided with a second vehicle near the Southbound 110 off-ramp. The victim’s vehicle continued to Figueroa where it collided with a power pole.

No suspect description is available at this time.

Ashan, a witness at the scene interviewed by Key News Network, said he was coming down Figueroa about to make a left turn when a vehicle crashed into a pole. He said that he and an unidentified gentleman both stopped and saw the driver bleeding profusely. They pulled him out and noticed he was struggling to breathe. They laid him on the floor and as his shirt came up, they saw a bullet wound on his stomach. Ashan said he and the other man kept talking to him to keep him conscious.

Ashan said when the ambulance came, the man lifted his arm, and that’s when he saw another bullet hole. The unidentified man pointed out the bullet holes in the victim’s vehicle. Ashan said the man said his name once and then stopped talking. He was semiconscious.
