Mid-City, Los Angeles, CA: A California Highway Patrol Central Division unit responded to a call of a wrong way driver and intentionally placed their vehicle into the path of the wrong way vehicle in attempt to stop it for the safety of the public when a collision occurred on the I-10 Freeway between Crenshaw Boulevard and La Brea early Thursday morning.

A 911 call reporting a driver traveling eastbound on the Westbound I-10 Freeway was received at approximately 2:11 a.m., according to CHP.
The officers did locate and see the wrong way driver traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. The officers were conducting their traffic break using lights and sirens attempting to stop the wrong way driver just by their presence, but unable to do so, said Officer Yebra with CHP Central Los Angeles Office interviewed at the scene by Key News Network.
According to Yebra, the driver continued traveling eastbound and the officers placed their patrol vehicle into the path of the wrong way driver to prevent injuries to the public. A collision then occurred involving the two vehicles.
CHP’s heroic actions prevented the potential of the wrong way driver crashing into other vehicles.
The driver of the vehicle was alive but unresponsive, and was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, said Yebra. He was the solo occupant in the vehicle.
The CHP officers were also transported by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics to Cedars-Sinai. Their injuries were minor, said Yebra.
In CHP officers’ experiences and training with wrong way drivers, alcohol and/or drugs is normally a factor, but it is unknown at this time if this is a factor in this incident, said Yebra.
