High Winds Fuel Brush Fire Above Homes in Ventura County

SOMIS, Calif., Dec. 9 (KNN) — A fast-moving brush fire, fanned by high winds, broke out near the top of the ridgeline of South Mountain in the Somis community of Ventura County at approximately 9:30 a.m.

The fire is burning along the southern slopes of South Mountain in rugged terrain to the west of Honda Barranca Road and north of La Loma Road, according to VC Emergency (Official Ventura County Incident Information Source).

The fire is currently burning above and behind homes in the area. The Ventura County Fire Department is leading the firefight.

Public Information Officer Andy VanSciver with the Ventura County FD, reported that the fire was at approximately 50 acres when interviewed at the scene by Key News Network Saturday morning. Both ground and air resources are attacking the fire, said VanSciver. Evacuations are in place.

VanSciver recommends that residents in the area of the fire access www.vcemergency.com for the latest information regarding evacuation orders. Shelter information, as well as road closures are also listed on the VC Emergency website.

A recent update on the fire indicates approximately 800 acres have now been consumed by flames driven to the south and west by gusty northeasterly winds.
