Investigation Underway into Officer-Involved Shooting Death of Armed Man

Seal Beach, Orange County, CA: An officer-involved shooting investigation is underway after a man was shot Monday night in the coastal city of Seal Beach in Orange County, and later died at a hospital.

Neighbors stated off camera to Key News Network that they heard a barrage of gunfire erupt shortly before 9:45 p.m. near the 100 block of Old Ranch Road within a gated community.

Seal Beach Police Department confirmed in a press release Tuesday, Jan. 17, that an officer-involved shooting occurred after police responded to a 9:36 p.m. Jan. 16 call regarding a suspicious person in front of a residence in the 100 block of Old Ranch Road.

When officers contacted the subject outside of the residence, Seal Beach PD stated “the subject produced a gun and an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

After the shooting, officers provided lifesaving efforts to the suspect. The suspect was then transported to a local hospital where he was declared deceased, according to Seal Beach PD.

A firearm was recovered from the scene, according to Lt. Julia Clasby.

Seal Beach PD has identified the suspect as a 47-year-old male resident of Irvine. No additional information will be provided until next of kin is notified of death.

There were no reported injuries to any officers as a result of the incident, Seal Beach PD reported.

“The Orange County District Attorney’s Office responded to initiate the investigation into the circumstances of the officer-involved shooting. The Seal Beach PD Detective Division and Internal Affairs Division also responded to the location,” stated the press release.
