Officers had opened fire on a suspect for an unknown reason at the time of the incident. Los Angeles City Fire Department arrived to the location and transported the suspect in critical condition to a local hospital.

Multiple bullet casings were observed marked at the scene, with one very close to a bicycle laying on the street.

LAPD Foothill Division had set up a command post to investigate the incident.

After a preliminary investigation, LAPD reported on Monday, June 20, that when officers arrived at the location, they encountered the suspect who was armed with a handgun and fired at the officers at which point an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck by gunfire and taken into custody.

LAPD reported the suspect was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

LAPD Foothill Division patrol officers responded to multiple 911 calls around 10:40 p.m. regarding a “man with a gun” near the intersection of Laurel Canyon and Van Nuys Boulevard, according to LAPD.

“The callers reported that the suspect was armed with a handgun and had pointed a firearm at several people at the scene and attempted to carjack a motorist near that same intersection,” said LAPD. The suspect’s gun was recovered at the scene.

Sergeant Bruce Borihanh, Public Information Officer with LAPD speaking to news media at the location, had no definitive answer yet regarding the bicycle laying in the street at the scene of the shooting. Borihanh said they were still trying to figure it out and until video evidence can be viewed, “we want to know how that bicycle that you see in the intersection wound up there, and until we really interview everyone that was involved and the witnesses that may have seen what happened, we’re not going to know what happened until this investigation continues.”

No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident, according to LAPD.

LAPD described the suspect only as a male in his 20s. His identity is unknown at this time.

LAPD said investigators are still in the early stages of this incident and have multiple witnesses to interview, evidence to collect including body-worn video and any surveillance video in the area along with interviewing the officers involved.
