LAPD Officer-Involved Shooting of Man Wielding Hatchet Caught on Video in Sun Valley

SUN VALLEY, LOS ANGELES, Nov. 30 (KNN) — A man wielding a hatchet was shot by the Los Angeles Police Department Thursday afternoon when the man approached officers after attempts were made to get the man to surrender the weapon.

LAPD’s North Hollywood Division officers responded to a report of a man wielding a hatchet in front of the Super 8 Motel located in the 7500 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Sun Valley.

Officers located the man, a male Hispanic with a red hat, in front of the motel. Officers observed the hatchet in the man’s hand and began negotiating with him in attempts to take him into custody.

After approximately 10 minutes of verbal communication, the suspect approached officers with the hatchet. Multiple beanbag shotguns and one 40 mm less-lethal device were used.

Once the suspect approached a group of officers, an officer-involved shooting took place. The suspect was struck multiple times by gunfire and was taken to a local area hospital in unknown condition.

The area is closed while officers conduct their investigation.
