LAPD initiated a pursuit of a reported stolen Honda around 9:45 p.m. Apr. 19, that began in the Van Nuys area of the San Fernando Valley on the 101 Freeway at high speeds, then into the Studio City area where the suspect drove along winding Mulholland Drive at reported speeds of 50 mph.

The suspect lost control of the vehicle on a Mulholland curve and crashed into a steep hillside landing the Honda at about a 45-50 degree angle. The back tail lights were flashing on and off after the crash, as well as running windshield wiper blades, but there was no movement from the suspect.

LAPD was close behind and quickly stopped traffic on both east and westbound lanes on Mulholland Drive, not far from Laurel Canyon Boulevard.

LAPD started planning their strategy when it became apparent the situation was unfolding into a standoff with the suspect.

K-9 Units were deployed as well as SWAT. Once on scene, SWAT officers utilized less-than-lethal weapons and were able to shoot into a back side window to place gas canisters into the interior of the Honda. There was still no response from the suspect or movement inside the vehicle.

After around 30 minutes into the standoff, SWAT officers broke the side back passenger window on the drivers side, as well as the drivers side window. At that point, an officer gained access to the interior of the vehicle and at the same time, another officer was able to access the drivers seat. The officers pulled the suspect out of the vehicle to the ground and then placed the suspect in custody.

Los Angeles Fire Department was called to the scene of the standoff with ambulance response. The suspect was transported in unknown condition to a local hospital by LAFD firefighter/paramedics.
