Santa Clarita Girl Scouts Plant Tree For Earth Arbor Day

SANTA CLARITA, Calif., Apr. 27 (KNN) — Local Girl Scout troops worked together with officials from the city of Santa Clarita to plant a tree at Heritage Park for Earth Arbor Day.

Mayor Cameron Smyth led the Saturday morning ceremony to mark local efforts to give back to the Earth’s ecosystem on the global day of awareness.

Each Girl Scout grabbed a shovel to place dirt in the dug hole for the tree while learning about different types of trees, steps to plant one and care.

Santa Clarita has been named a Tree City USA for 34 of those 37 years, and the only reason why it isn’t all 37 years is because it took time to get started as a city, according to Smyth. Santa Clarita became a city back in 1987.

Smyth said the very first law passed in the city of Santa Clarita was an oak tree preservation ordinance to protect the Heritage oaks that beautify the valley and are so much a part of Santa Clarita.

The city manages and maintains over 120,000 trees. There are over a million trees within the city of Santa Clarita, if not more, said Smyth.

The city plans to always keep Santa Clarita a Tree City USA.
