The Los Angeles Fire Department and the Los Angeles Police Department’s Pacific Division Patrol units responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash with parties trapped shortly after 2:30 a.m. in the 5000 block of Pacific Avenue in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles.

When first responders arrived at the scene, they located an unoccupied vehicle on its side on the boardwalk.

Bystanders told authorities there was somebody in the water.

A paddleboarder directed a Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department patrol boat to a male calling for help in Ballona Creek. As authorities in the boat approached the man, he resisted their offer for help to rescue him from the water.

Eventually, the man in the water was detained and transported to a local area hospital by LAFD resources.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.
