The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported sheared hydrant around 12:50 a.m. in the 15000 block of West Weddington Street in Sherman Oaks.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the water shooting into the air was in fact, caused by a broken water main and not a hydrant as originally reported.

The geyser was launching rocks and debris approximately 50 feet into the air from the ruptured hole in the roadway. Two vehicles were damaged by falling debris.

Firefighters were able to successfully shut down the waterflow to the street, stopping the geyser. However, the water was still very active inside the hole left in the street.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power was requested to the scene but had not yet arrived at the time of this report.
