Officer Shoots Suspect Refusing to Drop Knife During Stabbing of Victim

Long Beach, Los Angeles County, CA: A Long Beach officer-involved shooting occurred when the suspect refused commands to drop the knife during an active stabbing of a victim Sunday evening in the city of Long Beach, according to authorities.

Long Beach Police Department stated in a press release Monday afternoon, that officers were dispatched around 6:50 p.m. Mar. 5, to a stabbing in progress on the 5200 block of Atlantic Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect was stabbing the victim.

“During the stabbing, the officer gave commands for the suspect to drop the knife, the suspect refused, and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck by gunfire as a result of the officer-involved shooting,”stated the release.

Officers at the scene rendered aid to the suspect and stabbing victim. According to the preliminary investigation, the suspect stabbed the victim multiple times.

The Long Beach Fire Department responded to the scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital where he is listed in critical, but stable condition, reported LBPD. The stabbing victim was transported to a local hospital where he is also listed in critical, but stable condition.

A knife was recovered at the scene.

Detectives are investigating if the suspect and victim know each other and the motive for the stabbing.

The information is preliminary and the investigation is ongoing. The LBPD will be conducting a full and thorough multi-level review of the incident.
